Throughout the 121 years span since its foundation by Romania’s first king, Carol I, the Central University Library has been an educational institution, academic library and a cultural landmark for Bucharest. Throughout the 121 years span since its foundation, the Library underwent various modernization stages, expansion in the inter-war period, damages during the war, liquidation and reopening during the totalitarian regime, terrible damage during the Revolution of December 1989, revival and the new expansion in the 90s.
Along with about 2 million books, of which some are older than 500 years, and the few thousand square meters dedicated to study activities, the Library welcomes hundreds of students and researchers daily. In addition, the Library currently provides place for art exhibitions and installations, conferences and concerts, the Belle Époque architecture making also room for contemporary design.
